After letting off some steam in my post yesterday, I do feel better today. I called Sarah's doctor and we have an Upper GI set up for tomorrow morning, so hopefully she'll get some relief for her reflux & start gaining weight. While neither Sarah's PT or OT got back to me before they were scheduled to be at my house, they were both understanding, with the PT deciding to change the time to something more convenient. Plus, she also ended up coming off as a qualified PT, unlike how she sounded on the phone, where she couldn't even remember Sarah's name and it took her 5 minutes to get a decent sentance out. But, oh well, I guess this proves that you can't judge people before you know them.

Serious pointless vent
Ok, I've just about had enough with these Early On people. They just don't seem to give a crap about me or my family. They never return phone calls, are really hard to get ahold of in the first place, and don't seem all that interested in helping my aughter progress. It took them 3 months to get their acts together to get Sarah in PT in the fist place, waited until the END of the school year to finally decide to put her in OT, then change BOTH therapists on me, who apparently are NEVER in their offices in order to take calls. I accidently made both the PT & OT home visits for today at 1:30pm. I've been trying to get a hold of the PT (the only one I have a phone number for) for 2 days in order to change the appointment time. She hasn't called me back yet. The first time I tried to get in touch with her, it took a week before she returned my call. No one seems to think that urgency is of any matter here. Her pediatrician doesn't seem to think the fact that my child has lost almost a pound in month, and is steadily losing weight, is anything to be concerned about. We already KNOW she's hypothyroid, but the endocrimologist doesn't think that it requires medication. ARE THESE PEOPLE STUPID????? I'm so SICK of everything right now I could spit. My house is falling apart, I've got ants & spiders & pincherbugs everywhere, Sarah's puking on every square inch of carpet in this place, Emma seems to think she's incapable of getting herself dried off & dressed after a bath, and my husband, bless him, is trying his best to get good grades at school, while still dealing with a jerk boss & working 40+ hours a week. Between getting the kids fed, dressed, the house semi-cleaned and dealing with throw up on the floor every 10 minutes, it's past noon before I can do anything for myself, including shower. And I seem to be put back at square one every Monday. I think I've got things under control by the time Friday comes around, then everything falls apart over the weekend, and I'm back where I started. I'm exhausted and I need a break, from everything. I had been planning over the winter to go somewhere for a weekend, no kids, no husband. Didn't happen. And not likely to, either, for the next 2 years, until Jeff's finished with school. Am I being too selfish, to want some time to myself without getting puked on, or pulled out of a chair to perform a simple task for my daughter, such as taking a stack of books upstairs? Or is this all just part of the job, that unpaid job I have of being a SAHM. Am I just supposed to sit back & accept the fact that this will be my life, forever? I've sacrificed a lot, in order for Jeff to go into the Navy, to come here to go to school, and to stay at home with my kids. I've given up college, a career, even friends, because that's what's been best for my family. But, every once in awhile, I just get tired. I get cranky and selfish, and this is one of those times. I love my husband & my kids to death, and wouldn't give them up for anything. I'll feel better tomorrow, I know I will. But for right now, I'm just not very happy.

New milestone for Sarah
Sarah has started waving to people. When we wave at her, she does the same thing with her hand, kinda staring at it, like it's not part of her body, but some strange foreign object. She hasn't really imitated when you do something, so this is the first time that she's done it. Hopefully, now that she's going to start Occupational Therapy, things will start moving along.
She's getting another tooth, a molar. Poor kid's been smacking her hand against her ear, like the pain is radiating to it. She hasn't been exceptionally cranky, or else I might think it was an ear infection. I think it's almost through though. That'll be her 11th tooth.
Emma & I went to Coldstone last night after dinner. Jeff stayed home with Sarah. We got a bowl for him, and when I walked in, with two bowls of ice cream, as soon as Sarah saw me, she KNEW what it was I was holding, and immediately started squirming in Jeff's arms. She was flailing around, trying to get to the ice cream, furious that Jeff wouldn't let her fly out of his arms towards the ice cream. This kid, who can't even crawl yet, knows the sight of a Coldstone Creamery container. Guess that shows what her priorities are.
Jeff started his second semester of summer school today. He's got English 201 and Computers in Society. His book for that class is entitled Computer Concepts. Jeff IM'd me from that class, thankful there's a wireless internet connection, so he won't be bored for the 2 hours he has to sit there. I told him to be careful, as that's the same ideology he had during his A+ class, which ended up being harder than expected, due to his teacher being a complete perfectionist. He seems confident though, that it'll be no problem. Apparently his teacher is a little older, so he doesn't think that he'll expect perfection like the other teacher did.

I've got to see this movie, dude
Ok, just saw the teaser trailer for "Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire". Totally seeing that movie. I've just recently joined the Harry Potter bandwagon, at least with the books. I've seen all 3 movies so far and loved them all, but I wanted to go back & read all the books. I'm on book 3, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Considering I just started reading the books on Monday, you could say I haven't done much else. Aside from cleaning the house & taking care of the girls. But, the 6th book, Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, comes out in 3 weeks. That means I have 2 2/3 books to get through by then, so I can buy the new one. They're pretty easy reads, but only because they're so exciting. I know, I'm sounding like I'm 13, but I don't care.
So Sarah had her cardiologist appointment yesterday. They gave her an EKG, which was normal. The doc listened to her heart with the stethoscope, and he was still able to hear her PDA, which even her pedi hadn't been able to do. But, he said it was "trivial" and we shouldn't be worried about it. He said he didn't feel he needed to see her again until she was 3, so that's a big load off my mind. But, when they weighed her, she was only 14 lbs. 4 oz., which means she's lost 12 oz. in a month. That's almost a whole pound. I don't know what's causing it. She's been on her medicine to help with her reflux for 2 weeks, and I really thought that would clear up, it's still there, but not as bad. She has been sick, she had a cold a couple weeks ago, and she IS teething, but I don't know if any of these were bad enough to cause her weight loss. I'm thinking maybe we need to put her on medication for her hypothyroidism. I feel paranoid, calling her pedi every couple of days, he's going to think I'm a hypochondriac, by proxy, lol. Other than the weight issue, she's doing really well. Moving around a lot, getting into trouble, like a typical almost-toddler; bugging her sister constantly with pulling her hair & puking on her toys, lol. She really does look up to Emma. You should see the way she stares at her, like Emma is the best person in the world. I think it's going to be hard on Sarah when Emma goes to K next year. Emma, on the other hand, can't wait for K to start. I keep telling her that certain things need to happen before she can go, but she doesn't understand. It looks like it's going to be a long summer.

Goodbye preschool
Today was Emma's last day at her CMU Human Growth & Development preschool. Actually, tomorrow is the official last day, but Sarah has an appointment in Lansing at 1pm, and we can't be at two places at once. So, it's been a bittersweet day. While Emma was at school, I went & picked up a little gift for her teacher, Mrs. Joanna Wright. She has been such an awesome teacher to Emma this year, being very patient and kind, and helping her with some very tough obstacles. She has also had about 20 student teachers during the course of 3 semesters, all of whom I know Emma is going to miss. I came back a little early, to watch Emma with her classmates and take some pictures while they were out at recess. I had a little chat with Mrs. Wright while I was giving her her gift, and she said Emma's made a lot of progress this year. She's also made some new friends. She and Jaida, whom she didn't like for the longest time, are friends now. They were inseparable today. They sat, nicely, next to each other on the Circle Time rug (where they shared the orange butterfly spot, which has been a source of contention between numerous students), they even played together on the swings, and followed each other around on bicycles outside. I got a nice picture of them, that I hope to be able to download to the computer soon. There's a driver or something missing, so I haven't been able to put any new pictures up for about a month. She's also become good friends with Wyatt, who has a new baby brother at home. I'm not sure how many of the kids from her class are going to Morey next year. I doubt any, as it's not a school that's close. But, I know Emma will make new friends nxt year, as she's about as social as any kid I've seen.

Steak & Star Wars
That pretty much sums up Jeff & I's anniversary date. We went to Mountain Town, a local brewery & restaurant. It was nice. We were there early enough where it wasn't that crowded. It was nice to eat a meal that didn't involve the words "french fries". We had dessert, too, which is even rarer. Then we went to see Star Wars: Episode 3. It was REALLY good. I think we liked it best of all. I even cried at the end, which is kinda weird, but hey, whatever.
One thing about the midwest that I'm noticing: people don't know the term "personal space". The theater was nearly empty, maybe 20 or so other people. Jeff & I got there about 20 minutes early, so we had picked our seats, and gotten our popcorn & soda. Not 5 minutes before the movie starts, well into the previews, a couple walks in & sits RIGHT NEXT TO ME. Not even a seat of space in between. Ok, I can see how that may seems a little selfish, but come on: the theater's not even close to being full & you choose to buddy up next to me? There were empty seats in the middle, in the row in front of us, behind us, ALL OVER! Then this woman I think fell asleep in the middle because she was breathing louder than the movie. I don't know, maybe I'm being too snobby.
Emma & Sarah were watched by a guy named Nate, who's a student who works with Jeff. He's a really nice guy & did a great job with the girls. They were both in bed by the time we got home. His fiance had come over (after we learned they lived right across the street) and the girls had a blast. Emma even conned them into making her jello Scooby snacks. She told me about it later, like it was a secret.
We're driving to Grand Rapids this evening, as Jeff has an interview tomorrow. They sent him a schedule for it. It's a pretty intensive interview, as it goes from 10am to 4pm, with sections entitled: Decision Quality, Composure & Conflict Management. Glad I'm not in his shoes. So the girls & I are on our own for the day. I was trying to see if anyone on either of Ds boards I frequent who lived in the area were available to get together, but so far, no one's answered. Oh well, if all else fails, we'll just roam around, maybe go see a movie. Or get the van's oil changed.

Edit to previous post
Cancel the BBQ, too cold. Bummer. :-( Oh well, guess it's a good thing I hadn't started the cookies yet! I think Jeff's still expecting them, though.

Out of the mouths of babes
Emma & I were reading a book from her school library this morning called "Where's Chimpy?". It's about a little girl named Misty, who has Down syndrome, and she's looking all over the place trying to find her toy monkey, Chimpy. Emma still doesn't fully understand what Sarah having Down syndrome means. And I don't mind that, but I also want her to be educated about it, and not, all of a sudden, have someone come up to her & make a rude comment about her sister or something.
Anyways, I started out by saying that the little girl in the book had Ds, just like Sarah. She said,"I want to have Down syndrome, too!" I guess she thought it was cool, since the little girl had her own book.
We're going to a BBQ at a park this evening, for all the Tech-Ops people that Jeff works with. I was volunteered to bring cookies. Which I was happy to do, until I realized that I don't have any chocolate chips. So, we may have to change which type of cookie I'm bringing, since Jeff has the car, which also has my purse & the stroller in it. So I can't even walk to the store. Oh well, looks like it'll have to be peanut butter chookies instead.
So, we have a sitter for 6 hours tomorrow evening. The only thing I know we're doing is going to see Star Wars. Other than that, we really don't have any plans. I think we might go to dinner. I wanted to go glow bowling but that doesn't start until 9pm, and we have to be back home by 10pm. We might try it. I like bowling, even though I'm not very good.
Ok, so I'm really tired of all the running around these medical people are doing with Sarah's heart check-up. I called the Heart Center, where Sarah's appointment is next Thursday, and asked them if they were going to sedate her for her echo to check on her PDA. Well, they proceed to tell me that they're not doing an echo, just a consultation with the Pediatric Cardiologist and an EKG. AN EKG!!!!???? They already KNOW she has a small PDA, why do they need to do an EKG? This check-up was just to see if the PDA was gone or not. For crying out loud!!!! They didn't even have her records from her pediatrician. Oh my goodness, the ineptitude is ASTOUNDING! It's times like this when I wish I lived in a bigger town that had more kids with Ds, so that they wouldn't always put Sarah on the backburner.
Ok, have to put a link to these pictures of this little girl named Kennedy. She's a year old and has Ds. She is absolutely adorable!!!! http://www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=244888&messageid=1118962588
I wish there were someplace around here that did these kinds of pictures. I would love to get some of the girls. Then again, maybe it's a good thing we don't, because I think I would go broke!!

Happy Anniversary to us
Yesterday was Jeff & I's 8th anniversary. Since it's in the middle of the week (and we're po) we decided to wait until the weekend to go out. Luckily (or not, depending on how things go) Emma's preschool teacher and a few students were offering to sit for kids on Saturday night, from 6-11:30pm, for only $20. But, as of Monday, there weren't many takers, so it might be cancelled. But, even if it is, we have a back-up sitter. Our back-up is a guy named Nate, who works with Jeff at the college. He's a student, who is getting his degree in Early Childhood Education. He's a really nice guy, but at first glance, might seem a little scary. He's big, about 6'2", with a beard. While I don't care what he looks like, I know that Emma is used to small females watching her & Sarah. I'm only a little worried about Emma's first impression of him. But, even IF she is a little wary of him at first, something tells me it won't last. As soon as she realizes that he knows how to play, just like all her other sitters, it won't matter what he looks like.
Anyway, I made Jeff's favorite dinner last night (Hamburger Helper Stroganoff) and Emma & I baked a cake yesterday. It was kinda weird looking, only because the only cake mix we had was chocolate & Emma wanted to use the pink frosting with the sprinkles. Ok, whatever. So dark brown cake with bright pink frosting & sprinkles. Happy anniversary!!! Then, after the kids went to bed, we did what every other couple might do on their anniversary...we played video games. If you know us well at all, it's not surprising, as we're both addicted to video games. Especially World of Warcraft right now. We both just hit lvl 40 & finally got mounts. So, instead of walking everywhere, now we can ride horsies. Trust me, it makes a world of difference.
Jeff has an interview in Grand Rapids on Monday. So, we went out last night and bought him a suit. He had one that was made in Thailand, but that was 4 years ago, and it doesn't fit anymore. This one is very nice. We also bought a nice shirt & some Florsheim shoes to go with it. EXPENSIVE Florsheim shoes. Things were $100. I don't think I've EVER owned a pair of shoes that cost $100, and I'm a girl. But, he made it partly up to me by buying me a pair of cute strappy dress shoes. With a 2 inch heel. So now I'm very much taller than him when I wear them, lol. But they match the outfit I got for Mother's Day, so I'm happy.

Birthday cake & the doctor's office
What a combination in less than 6 hours. Emma went to her first school-friend's birthday party yesterday. It was for Sarah, who was turning 5. It was at a local McDonald's, and it was pretty fun. All the kids had a Happy Meal, a small ice cream and a piece of cake. Then they played games & ran around on the big play gym that they have. Emma had started to tell me that her tummy wasn't feeling very well while she was eating her cake, but I just thought she'd had too much. She didn't say anything after that. We went home, where Jeff had stayed with Sarah, because she was sick. She'd had a cold all week and it has started to get worse. When I got home, her temp was 102 and she was lethargic and could barely keep her eyes open. She hadn't been sleeping well and all she wanted to do was nurse. So, off to the Urgent Care we went. Of course, in typical "my kid" style, she perked up by the time we got there, but was still not her usual bubbly self. They took her temp (101), weighed her (still only 15 lbs.), and then stuck us in a room for an hour. She was pretty content just to lie on the table & be played with. A nurse came in and took samples of her snot (yucka) and a doctor listened to her breathing. I thought maybe, with her fever & weird breathing, that they'd order chest x-rays, but no. They diagnosed her with nasopharyngitis (a cold, but with an infection) and put her on Zithromax. Yay. But today, she's looking much better and seems to be in a better mood. Still doesn't want to eat that much, but what are you going to do?
In the meantime, while Sarah & I were at the hospital, Emma was having problems of her own. Jeff says that no more than 5 minutes after we'd left, Emma puked all over the floor and in the bathroom sink. He says that at least she recognized the fact that she has to vomit and was on her way to the bathroom, but didn't quite make it the first time. I felt so bad for my little girls. It's no fun to be sick. And, not to mention, both Jeff & I have a cold, as well. It comes in rounds for our household.

Inspiration
Disability can't keep woman from success in work, sports
By Helen GaoUNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
June 8, 2005
Lisa Hannaman knows she's different. She was born with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes mental retardation and abnormal facial features.
But that hasn't stopped the 29-year-old woman from achieving independence and success.
Employed as a part-time aide at Alcott Elementary School in North Clairemont, Hannaman cares for special-needs toddlers, some with Down syndrome, who are enrolled in an early education program at the campus.
She's been at Alcott five years, and her upbeat personality and dedication to her job have earned her a San Diego Unified School District employee of the year award. "She's been so inspirational. Sometimes parents will get sad and depressed when they have a child with a problem," said Lindsey Linden, a resource teacher for the program who nominated Hannaman. "Parents look at Lisa and they can expect their children can have a happy and satisfying life, too."
While many of her peers with disabilities live in group homes or with their parents, Hannaman shares an apartment with a roommate in Mira Mesa and takes city buses to work. Using the money she earns from her job and supplemental income from Social Security, she takes care of her own bills.
"She is totally financially independent," said Beth Hannaman, Lisa's mother, who is a special education resource teacher assigned to the district's early education program. "She doesn't have a lot of money left at the end of the month, but she is able to make all of her own payments."
Lisa Hannaman is also an accomplished athlete.
Since she was 10 years old, Hannaman has been active in a wide array of events sponsored by Special Olympics. This year, she competed in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, where she won a bronze medal in figure skating and fourth place in pairs skating. It was her second time participating in world competitions.
She also runs track and line dances. In the summer, she is on a sailing team. In the fall, she plays soccer.
In addition, she is writing a book about her life, tentatively titled, "What it is like having Down Syndrome."
At Alcott, Hannaman is one of several aides who help supervise children in class and monitor them on the playground. Her job also includes setting out play equipment, snacks and lunches.
"I can't imagine the class without her," said classroom aide Karen DiCarlo.
She said Hannaman has a gift for connecting with children."
"She gets right down to their faces and talks to them. She's real good at communicating with them. She's very sweet."
Earlier this year, while Hannaman was in Japan, her co-workers nominated her as a district employee of the year. Three weeks ago, Hannaman was named the 2005 Classified Woman of the Year by the district.
The district employs about 6,800 classified employees who perform various support functions, such as being classroom aides, secretaries and campus security assistants.
During a ceremony honoring her, Hannaman delivered a speech that moved a packed audience to tears and standing ovations.
"I hope this award makes other people with disabilities want to work hard and follow their dreams," she said.
A couple of times a year, Hannaman speaks to parent support groups, physicians and social workers about her experiences and what she's been able to accomplish, despite her disability.
Crystal Pacheco, whose 7-year-old son has Down syndrome and who works at Alcott's program as a nurse's aide, said Hannaman is an inspiring role model.
"I have a lot of respect for her. I hope someday my son can do as well as she does," Pacheco said. "She makes us all realize that people with Down syndrome can live normal lives."
Hannaman's mother said while her daughter was growing up, she was not treated differently because of her disability. Around the house, Hannaman, the middle of three children, did her share of chores. She played on the neighborhood soccer team, participated in gymnastics and took swimming lessons.
"She knows she has a disability," Lisa's mom said. "The only time she ever used it as an excuse was when she was in fourth grade. She said 'I couldn't do math because I have Down syndrome.' That's the only time I heard her give an excuse she can't do something."
Hannaman moved out of her parents' house when she was 25, with some assistance provided by the San Diego Regional Center, a state agency that provides support services to people with developmental disabilities. The center helped her find an apartment and a roommate and teamed her up with a life coach, who visits her periodically to provide guidance and oversight.
Moving out was Hannaman's idea.
"My mother did not want to throw me out. I wanted to live on my own," she said. "I am really independent."
Eventually, Hannaman hopes to buy a condominium and get married. She's had a steady boyfriend for 10 years.

Fun in the sun
The girls & I were invited to go swimming at a new friend's community pool this morning. As it was already extremely warm by 10am, it wasn't hard to get the kids into the pool. She has 2 boys, Topher & Tolby, 4 & 3, and Seally, a little girl who is about 2 weeks older than Sarah. Emma had a blast! She's not used to going in big pools, so the water wings we bought yesterday, along with borrowing her new friend's inner tube, were on her at all times. But, she still didn't want to put her face into the water, even with the goggles we bought her. Oh well, it'll come with time. Sarah, who is battling a cold, I believe, was not a happy camper. We bought her a little floaty, that's shaped like a dolphin. She just sat in it, with her head on the little inflatable pillow on the front, and was basically solemn the whole time. In her defense, I had given her some baby Dimetapp to help with her coughing and runny nose only an hour beforehand. I took her out and she fell asleep on my shoulder while I was walking around the shallow end of the pool. She ended up taking a 3 hour nap. Poor little baby's just not feeling ship shape right now. Emma, on the other hand, couldn't get enough of the pool. She didn't exactly fight me when it came time to go, but she deliberately stayed in the pool after I asked her to get out numerous times. I reminded her that if she didn't get out, she would miss her school bus. That got her out fairly quickly. We went home, and had just enough time to get a quick bath, eat lunch and run out the door for the bus. Can't wait to do that every morning starting in August.
Speaking of which, I finally took in Emma's birth certificate and shot record to her new school. They were the last pieces of info they needed before she was officially enrolled in the school. I put in a verbal request for a certain teacher, only because we'd met her before and the other K teacher is pregnant and will be leaving in the middle of the year. I know Emma has a hard time with that kind of stuff, so I figured I'd try to get the teacher that will be around the whole time.
Emma's preschool teacher and 3 student teachers are offering a "Parent's Night Out", where they will watch the kids for $20 flat for 5 1/2 hours. Considering our anniversary is next week, I signed Emma & Sarah up. I asked Mrs. Wright beforehand, to see if it would be ok for them to watch Sarah, as well, and she said it would be fine. But, $20 for 5 1/2 hours!!?? That's a deal! Generally we pay our sitters well, basically so they'll want to watch our kids again. Like, $30 for 3 hours. So this is a steal for 5 1/2 hours. I'll just make sure she's got enough food & drinks to last and toys to play with.

Control freak
Well, after much hemming & hawing, and promises to do this right after spring break, and whining from Emma about being with her friends, I finally have a schedule set up for Emma to start riding the bus to & from school 2 days a week. I still want to take her the other two days, so I can briefly chat with her teachers about how she's doing. I know, it's a control thing. I truly wonder at how working parents can send their kids off to the sitters & then on a bus to school and back. Very strong, cause I don't think I could do it. I know they do it out of necessity, but I can't even fathom it. And next year, with Emma's elementary school being so far out of town, she's going to end up taking the bus probably at least 3x a week, maybe 4. I know I'm still going to want to take her & pick her up once a week to touch bases with her teacher. But the bus ride there & back is really long, about an hour or so. She might end up having to be picked up at 6:30am. Yikes! That's way early, even for adults. But the good thing is, if she takes the bus, I don't have to get myself presentable in the morning. Well, not so much.
A few updates: Jeff just finished the first of two summer school classes. It was an accelerated course on the American Civil Rights Movement. Only 3 weeks long & very stressful. He doesn't think he did that well, in fact, he'll be satisfied if he passes. I'm sure he'll probably wish he'd opted for the Credit/No Credit option.
Emma's losing another tooth. It's taking awhile to come out but it's definitely loose.
Sarah started her medication on Monday for her reflux. So far, I haven't seen a vast improvement, but it's coming along I think. She's only supposed to be on this for 2 weeks and then we'll see where she is with the puking. On a bad note, however, I think she's coming down with a cold. I think both the girls are. They've been coughing and sneezing and having runny noses. But they don't seem overly cranky, which you would think would happen with a cold. But Sarah's eyes are starting to get watery, so I'm maybe changing my mind and thinking it's allergies. I know Jeff has really bad springtime allergies, but I didn't think about the kids.
Speaking of spring, I don't know where it went, but it's not spring anymore. I think it's officially summer. It's miserable here. Humidity up the wazoo, and it's 82 degrees at 10 am!!! Insane. Our poor grass is dead, and I'm slowly trying to squeeze some life out of it. But I can't water until about 6pm due to the fact that it receives 100% sun ALL day. There's no shade whatsoever. Which is why we don't go outside very often. Maybe I'll buy one of those kiddy pools and set it up in the front yard (where there's at least some shade from the house) with a sprinkler. It also has the most green grass, so it's not just dead weeds & dirt.

What a difference a year makes...
I'm volunteering for the Special Olympics today. The Michigan Special Olympics are held on the CMU campus every June. I wanted to work at it last year, but wasn't able to. I'm only able to help in the evenings, so I'm working both the Opening Ceremonies and the Closing Ceremonies/Dance. I'm thinking about bringing Sarah with me, only to help Jeff out, since he's having to come home early from work in order for me to go. We thought we'd be able to get a sitter, but no such luck.
It's funny, I think back to before we knew Sarah had Down syndrome, and I wonder if I'd ever have volunteered for the Special Olympics, or done anything pertaining to people with special needs, if we didn't have Sarah. And the sad part is, I probably wouldn't. Not because I don't care about people with special needs, but because it didn't relate to me first-hand.
I often think about how my priorities have changed since having Sarah. It's funny how something that can seem so terrible to most people, can seem like a blessing to others. I still cringe at the fact that 80-90% of people who find out prenately that their baby has Down syndrome terminate. I could NOT imagine our life without Sarah. She & Emma are the joys of my life. I know they are going to be the best of friends as they grow up. Sarah's going to change so many misconceptions and brighten so many people's lives. I'll try to take some pictures while I'm there and post them tomorrow or Saturday.

Go ahead, tease me
Ok, for those of you who don't know, we don't like Michigan. I like our little town, and Jeff loves his job, but his boss he could do without. The biggest reason we came out here is because of the free college tuition. So, Jeff's been working his tush off trying to finish college as quickly as he can. He has two more years, if he goes full-time, every semester, including both summer semesters. It's starting to wear on all of us. Recently, he's been putting out his resume, seeing if anyone will bite, even without a Bachelor's. He's gotten a couple, including two in Irvine, CA. Yes, CA, where we've been wanting to get back to since we moved here. We've discovered that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the country, just relatively cheaper. And it's not cheap to fly to CA with 4 people. We'd rather drive only a few hours. Even if gas is almost $3 a gallon, and housing prices are through the roof. We'd be close to family...and Disneyland.
Jeff had a phone interview with one of the jobs in Irvine. It's a major consulting firm, and would require about 20% travel, but I'm cool with that. The Navy trained me well for having my husband gone for extended periods of time. But the good thing is, he wouldn't be gone for 6 months at a time. So, I don't know what to think. We want to get back to CA, but we also want Jeff to be able to complete his degree. It's practically a requirement for most jobs, in order to be paid what he's worth. So, we're having a dilemma. You'd think we wouldn't have to contemplate this very much, but we are. Emma's starting school in August, Sarah's getting her therapies, we've made a couple friends. But it's California!! We've been hoping for something like this to come along! We'd definitely have to make a certain amount of money in order to afford it, as "just any ol' job in CA" won't do. Serious stress...

More fun at the ER
Emma got her 4 year shots last week. I call them her "Kindergarden shots" because I told her she needed them in order to go to Kindergarden, which is true. I know, I'm messed up, as Emma HATES shots. She about through a fit in January when she got her flu shot. Well, she still through a fit this time, and she had to get 3 shots, 2 in one leg, one in the other. She got over it pretty fast, although she did say her leg hurt the rest of the day. She was dragging it behind her like a paralyzed appendage. Other than that, I thought everything was ok. The next morning, however, there was about a 3 inch diameter red splotch surrounding the injection site. It was the leg her got 2 shots in. I called the nurse, who said it was probably a reaction to the tetanus shot, as some kids have with the 5th and final shot. She said to call back if it got worse. So, I watched it over the course of the day and it seemed to be fine. Emma went to school, and she had a field trip to a local elementary school to check out their Kindergarden. She was exhausted when she got home and actually fell asleep at the table. She took a 2 1/2 hour nap (after I put her in bed). She woke up and seemed fine. When I was getting her ready for bed at about 9pm, I noticed that the red area on her leg had grown to about 6-7 inches in diameter, was swollen & extremely warm. Her poor thigh looked about 50% bigger than her other one. I called the doc on call (her actual pediatrician) and he said, it was probably nothing, but to take her to the ER. So, off we went. Jeff stayed home with Sarah, as he had to study for a test. So we get to the ER and thankfully the wait wasn't that long. They gave her some Benadryl (just in case it was an allergic reaction) and some antibiotics (just in case it was an infection). They also took some blood, via a finger prick (which I convinced Emma was easier than a needle, although it still made her freak out), to check her blood count. They decided it was cellulitis, which is an infection of the tissue under the skin. They figured she must have gotten bacteria in the injection site & that's what caused it. They put her on more antibiotics and sent us home. Now, 5 days later, it's MUCH better. The area is still pretty visible, but it's no longer red or warm or swollen. It just looks like a hige faint bruise, a light brown color. She doesn't know why she still has to take the medicine, if she's all better.
Emma got invited to her first school-friend birthday party!! A schoolmate, named Sarah, invited Emma to her birthday party on the 11th. She was SO excited! It's at McDonald's, so I know Emma's going to have a great time. She says she wants to get Sarah color markers for her birthday. I'm trying to at least get her to change her mind to crayons, which will probably leave a better impression (pardon the pun) on her parents. While Sarah seems a very mature & leveled header almost-5-year old, I don't even like letting Emma use markers without supervision, and I don't want to be the cause of headaches for Sarah's parents.
Our little Sarah has been making some serious milestones in the gross motor catagory. In the past few weeks she has learned to sit up from a lying down position and is army crawling. She still uses rolling as her primary means of transportation, but army crawling is a close second. She is also working very hard on getting on her hands & knees. She's getting into EVERYTHING! Anything she sees she puts in her mouth. Jeff caught her with half a pistachio and a piece of plastic the other day. Doesn't say much about how frequently I vaccum, does it?
I don't remember Emma putting me through this much stress about her choking on everything. Maybe it's because she was my first, and I was on her like a hawk, making sure she didn't get into everything. Sarah's just stressing me out about all this. She'll eat paper, carpet fibers, and recently, My Little Pony hair. Yay.

Good info to know
Someone just recently posted this on a board I frequent and thought it was interesting.
**Talking about Down syndrome? A language guide.
Appropriate Language
Communicating about individuals with Down syndrome with both positive and accurate language is an important element to advocacy. It is often difficult to confront someone who has hurt us with their words or labels.
So often, family and friends do not know what to say. Knowledge is key and this simple guide is meant to help others speak in ways that are more politically correct, avoiding hurtful and offensive language.
The contents of this brochure have been modified and reprinted from “How Do I talk About Down Syndrome?” by UPS for DownS (United Parent Support for Down syndrome, a volunteer organization of parents of children with Down syndrome based in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.)
“How often misused words generate misleading thoughts.” Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)
Appropriate Words
Baby/Child/Person with Down syndrome – the emphasis should always be on the person first, not the disability. This is referred to as first person language. When we take care to put children first, and let the disability remain in the background, we are teaching others where the emphasis needs to be.
Developmentally Delayed – this term is the common reference to describe delays in development, such as language, walking, and all other areas of a child’s learning process. Most families find it less offensive than the term mentally retarded.
Has Down syndrome – Someone who has Down syndrome is not a victim of, diseased by, nor do they suffer from or are they afflicted with Down syndrome.
Mental Retardation – This is an accurate term to describe developmental functioning level, but is less acceptable to many parents than the term “developmentally delayed.” Use it with caution.
Typically developing/Non-disabled child – Both of these terms are acceptable and positive ways to refer to people who do not have Down syndrome or another disability.
Inappropriate Words
A Down(s) - A person with Down syndrome is not the disability. There are many other things that should, and do, define that person. It is dehumanizing and strips people of their dignity to be referred to as a disability. Instead of saying “He is a Down” or "She is Downs,” try “He or she has Down syndrome.”
Down syndrome Child/Baby – This goes back to referring to the person first, not the disability. This is one of the most common misstatements made and often causes parents to cringe, at least inwardly.
Normal kids – Please realize that we perceive our children as being pretty normal kids. Comparing them to normal children implies that a child with Down syndrome is something less than normal.
Retard/Retarded – Currently, the best reference is developmentally delayed (for children) and developmentally disabled (for adults).
Mongolism – This is an extremely outdated term that was once used to refer to people with Down syndrome. The word should never be used when referring to or about someone with Down syndrome.
“They” as in “they are so loving; they smile all the time; they are always happy.” - Don’t generalize about people with Down syndrome. “They” are not all alike; nor are they “eternal children.” Much like non-disabled children, kids with Down syndrome have a full range of emotions and will mature and grow into adulthood.
“How mild/severe is it?”- A person either has Down syndrome or they do not. Down syndrome is not an illness. Having Down syndrome does not mean a person is sick.
“But you’re so young!”- Although the chances of a woman having a child with Down syndrome increase significantly over the age of 35, there are far more children with Down syndrome born to younger mothers.
Handicapped – Use ‘has a disability” instead.
Downs or Down’s syndrome – There is no “s” or “’s” in the first name of this syndrome, and recent practice holds that the “s” in syndrome is not to be capitalized.
Suffers from/Afflicted with Down syndrome – Our children are not suffering or afflicted. We must instill a great sense of pride and self-esteem in all children, so should ensure that we do not make anyone feel that Down syndrome is something terrible or something to be ashamed about.
Vocabulary
Early Intervention – Services provided to infants and toddlers with disabilities ages birth to three and their families through a comprehensive program or individual providers.
IFSP/IEP – Individualized Family Service Plan (early intervention document) and Individual Education Plan (public school document.)
Speech Therapy – Works on language, listening and feeding issues.
Physical Therapy – Works on gross motor skills for large muscle groups, such as walking, sitting, crawling.
Occupational Therapy – Works on fine motor skills, such as manipulating objects with hands.
Hypotonia – Low muscle tone, common in people with Down syndrome.
Chromosome abnormalities – It is an “abnormality” of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome. All of the other chromosomes are normal. Even the 21st chromosome is normal. There is just too much of it. Down syndrome is not caused by anything that the parents did before or during pregnancy.
Nondisjunction Trisomy 21 – Is the most common type of Down syndrome (95%) and means that instead of two 21st chromosomes, a baby was born with three 21st chromosomes, thus causing them to have Down syndrome. This division of chromosomes occurs immediately at conception. The extra chromosome is found in all cells. Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes.
Mosaicism – This is the least common form of Down syndrome (1-2%). Chromosomes divide unevenly, but not until the second or third cell division after conception, meaning only some of the cells have the extra chromosome.
Translocation – A part of the 21st chromosome has broken off and attached itself to another chromosome, providing extra genetic material in all of a person’s cells. Only 2-3% of babies with Down syndrome have translocation.

Hello from CA!
It's been a tiring, rough week, to say the least. After getting the news last Saturday that my grandfather had passed away, I was scurrying around, trying to get plane tickets for the girls & I to fly out here. We had thought that the funeral might be on Friday or Saturday. Well, after I'd bought the tickets for Wednesday evening, I got a call from my mom that said the Memorial Service was Wednesday morning and the funeral was Thursday afternoon. So, that meant I had to push up my flight a day, which also meant I'd have one less day to get ready. So, the race was on. I seriously didn't think I'd leave on time, but we did. And the house wasn't even a total disaster area.
So, the girls and I got into Sac at about 11pm on Tuesday. My friend Deanna picked us up from the airport and took us to my mom's. Well, after sleeping on the 2nd flight from Minneapolis, MN, both the girls were wide awake when we got there. Needless to say, we didn't get to sleep until about 2am.
The memorial service was in Modesto the next morning at 11am. It was my opportunity to say goodbye to my grandpa face-to-face. They didn't have an open casket, but it was open before the service began. I left the girls with my mom so I could be alone. It was really hard and that's when it hit me. I was sad, but happy that he wasn't suffering anymore.
The service itself was nice. It was at his church and they played a few hymns, including his favorite "How Great Thou Art". The last song they played was "Daddy's Hands". I knew my mom had picked that one out. After the service and a small reception, most of the fmaily went over to my Grannie's house. That's my grandpa's mother. Yes, she's still alive. She's 92.
The next day we had a graveside service in Sacramento. Grandpa's buried next to my uncle Rick, who died when I was 1 1/2 and who is buried next to my grandma, who died when I was 3. I'd never been there before, so I'm glad I now know where everyone is. We all went over my to Uncle David & Aunt Kelly's house afterwards. Then my cousin Michael had a baseball game to go to, so a few of us went to cheer him on. He hit a homerun before my mom & the girls and I got there. It was too bad we missed it.
The girls & I went to stay with my in-laws yesterday. They went in the spa & loved it. Sarah was out like a light by 8pm. Emma went with Melissa & I to the mall. I bought a purse. I've been needing one for awhile. Melissa bought Emma a couple toys from the Disney Store. This kid (along with her mother) are in serious mall withdrawl. I hate having to drive 45 minutes to go to a decent store.

Family emergency
The girls & I will be making an emergency trip to CA for a little while. My grandfather passed away this past Saturday. We're leaving Wednesday evening. That's also Sarah's birthday, but Jeff and I have decided to celebrate when we get back. We're going to be in CA for about a week and a half. So, it's crunch time for me to try & get everything ready before we leave. There's a list a mile long of stuff that I need to get finished. Laundry, house, packing, food (so Jeff doesn't end up eating HotPockets for a week). And on top of it all, Emma's coughing up a storm & I think Sarah has the croup. Yay! Nothing can ever be simple for my family.
So, I've been on the phone this morning, trying to change appointments & figure out how I'm going to get Emma's Kindergarden Round-Up re-scheduled. While I know that my family would know I was thinking about them from out here, I felt I really should be there in person. My grandfather's health hasn't been good for a long time, but this was still a shock. He was always smiling when I saw him. He loved seeing the girls last summer. We were able to get a picture of 5 generations: my grannie, my grandpa, my mom, me & the girls. It's somewhere on my mom's computer. I'm going to get it printed out so I can put it up on our wall. I feel bad for my grannie. She's lost 2 of her 3 children, plus 2 husbands. And my poor Great-aunt Reba has lost her father, her husband & her 2 brothers. It sucks to get old & have everyone you love pass away. But, you have memories and those can be very comforting.
On a positive note, I'll be able to see my cousin Keith, whom I haven't seen since my wedding, I don't think. He was in the Air Force for 4-5 years and stationed in Missouri or Illinois (can't remember). Plus, my mom said that my grandmother's family is also going to be there. I've NEVER met them. I wish I could see these people under better circumstances, but I know we're coming together to celebrate a loved one, and that's ok.
I'm going to miss you grandpa.

Idiots with access to the internet
A few days ago, someone on the Trisomy21online website posted a link to this guy Bob Lonsberry's site. He had written an article defaming the special education system in public schools, basically saying it was detrimental to the "regular" students, taking away teacher's time, and that these students could be disruptive, causing the regular students harm. People about hit the roof. I know that the special ed. programs run the gambit from mild dyslexia to autism and beyond, but PLEASE! Revert back to the days of old when kids who were "mildly different" were sent to "special schools" (AKA institutions) because they would receive a better education. it was all nice & tidy. The regular kids didn't even know about the special needs kids, because they never saw them. He even brought up the term "separate but equal". Are we in the 1950's???? Was he actually comparing special needs kids to how African-Americans were treated? I could NOT believe the gall of this guy. Why don't we just terminate all the special needs kids when they're born and save the system tons of money?? Or better yet, pump ALL the money into prenatal testing so we can eradicate those "retarded" kids before they're even born? Because, heaven forbid they be in the same class as your "perfect" child. While I know that inclusion is not for every child, and some children will learn better in a separate setting, the idea of lumping all special needs kids together in one group is ridiculous. And he has a LINK to the Mormon Church website on his site. He used to be Mormon, but was excommunicated. So, it's ok for him to tell others what is right, but not do it himself.
I'm all for the First Amendment, but it doesn't seem right that this guy gets paid to write imflamatory articles about things he has no knowledge of. It's not like he has a child in the special education program. I read all these posts from moms on the T21 site about how they are struggling with getting a fair & decent education for their child with DS. One in particular stands out. Tori, whose mother has been fighting with her school all year to get her involved with the mainstream class more often, finally got through to the school. Tori has been thriving ever since. It just seemed the school didn't believe in Tori's abilities. People have this mental image of a special needs child, that they can only learn so much. They don't want to give them the benefit of the doubt. A child with DS's capability to learn doesn't end, just like a regular person. It only ends when someone gives up on them.
I'm at a loss, because I feel the need to argue for Sarah's right to a fair & equal education before she's even going to school. This is not something I should have to be worrying about when my child is only a year old. Right now all I should be concerned with is helping her learn how to crawl, then cruise, then walk. I don't want to throw myself a pity party, as it's not about me. it's about Sarah. But, sometimes I get in the rut of comparing her to other typical babies and I get so upset. I keep thinking, these people have no idea how lucky they are. They don't have to worry about the same things I do.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Yesterday was a pretty big day for Sarah. The optical shop called and said her glasses were in. We went to go pick them up while Emma was at school. They're so cute!!! The lab had shortened the temples so they weren't gargantuan on her. They're still a little too long in the temple, but not nearly as bad. They also have an elastic band that goes around the back, but even on it's smallest setting, is too big. I'll need to modify that a bit. Sarah has already shown her disdane for these glasses. While the guy was fitting them to her face, she starting throwing a major fit, trying to grab them off her face. The fit miraculously stopped as soon as they were off. She then shot the guy the EVIL EYE, and proceeded to look at me, and raise her arms to be picked up. It was too funny.
We went over to Jeff's office to show him her new specs. The first thing out of his mouth was, wow, those are thick. It's true, they are pretty big lenses. Poor thing must have been REALLY blind. Now it's just going to take some time for her to realize she can see better, albeit differently, with them on.
She seemed kinda depressed in the first few hours after we got them. She kept shooting me these, WHAT did I do to deserve THIS????, looks. She was quieter than usual and didn't seem very social. But, after a little while she seemed to perk up.
Emma, Sarah & I went to go check out the charter school that's just outside of town. This was the one I as drawn to at the Kindergarden Info Night. It's technology based and seems to be really good. I had planned on checking it out 2 weeks ago, but then the sickness came and has just recently (within the past 4 days) decided to relinquish it's grasp on me. I wasn't able to see much of the work inside, as it was recess/almost lunch time. But I saw both the K classrooms and saw some of the kids during their centers. Some of them were working on the computers and some were working on the letter "Y", using sand in a container to draw out the letter over & over. Very clever. So far I'm pretty impressed with how they teach. I enrolled her after the tour. They have a "Kindergarden Round-Up" on the 26th. That's basically where they do all of their assessment tests to see where Emma is academically. I think they also do a hearing & vision test. It should be interesting.
We also cut Sarah's hair last night. Emma got her first professional haircut on Sunday, and we probably should have had them do Sarah's too, but I did Emma's first big one, so out of nostalgia, I guess, I did it myself. We cut about 4 inches off, and trimmed her bangs. It's about an inch above her shoulders now. It's kinda hard to cut hair on a moving baby, but I did my best. There's pictures on the website. Emma did very well during her haircut. She even let the lady wash her hair in the big sink. She basically got a bang trim, about an inch or so off the bottom, and some face framing. It looks really good!
The weather here is really turning around. There was no snow on Saturday like it said there would be, but that's how Michigan weather is. It changes hourly. It's supposed to be 75 today, but then between 50-60 for the next week and a half. Like I said, it can change hourly.

Making Strides
I feel less of a complete lump today. I actually started feeling a little better yesterday, with the pressure in my face a lot less and also less of a pounding in my head. Still a snot-face though.
Jeff & I are going to a LAN party tonight. Basically, a bunch of geeks sitting around for 12 hours, playing video games. Jeff went to one a few months ago. I told him I wanted to go to this one. I'm probably not going to do that well, as I don't have a lot of time to practice on the games that they play, but it'll be fun. A girl named Jessica is going to come over and watch the kids for us. This will be the first time I've been away from Sarah for overnight. Even though I'll just be down the street at the college, I know I'll probably be worried about her the whole time. She's been getting up at about 1:30am for the past few nights. Then she's up again at about 6:30am. But, this girl seems pretty competent. She's watched really young children overnight for the past few years. And she's not a freshman, lol. I think she's about 23. Plus, she's getting her degree in Special Education, which I thought was really neat. She was recommended by a student co-worker of Jeff's (who's going to be at the LAN party, the only other girl) and Jessica said she was really excited when she heard that Sarah had Ds. She's worked with kids with Austism and Cerebral Palsy.
I'm going to pump to make sure she has something to give Sarah in case she wakes up. Emma's excited to have someone new come over. She met Jessica last night and was happy that she was coming back tonight. She told her to bring her pj's and that they're going to have a party. With popcorn and everything. It's a "Girls Only Party", lol.
On a different note, Emma has been doing really well with her chores. All this week, she has made her own bed, without any prompting from me. And she does really well at it. She's kept her room practically spotless all week, as well. This must be her genes from Jeff kicking in, as I am NOT innately a clean freak. Although she does need some help remembering that her toys on the floor of the living room are her responsibility, too. Apparently she thinks that she only needs to take care of them once they're in her room, and I'm the one who needs to get them there. Sounds like someone else I know...

Sick & tired
Everytime I've written in the past week or so, I keep thinking the worst of this nasty cold has passed. But, I was proven wrong again. A few days ago, I started feeling pressure in the left side of my face, all the way down to my jawline. I knew it was something else besides just a viral infection. So, I went back to the doctor yesterday and sure enough, I have a sinus infection. Yay. I was put on Amoxicillin 3x a day for 10 days. This morning, the pain is now in BOTH sides of my face. I swear, I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm now on 3 prescription medications. Well 4, if you count my birth control pills. Which are negated by the antibiotics I'm now on. Grrr.
Emma went on her first trip around the block on her bike today. She was very excited. Sarah & I followed her with the stroller. She did really well, only having one minor accident. One of her training wheels went off the sidewalk and she tipped over. This was where I inserted my "that's why we wear helmet's" speech. Which she does, but I just wanted to reinforce the issue. There were a few places where we had to ride on the side of the road, because there are no sidewalks. Apparently the seam between the asphalt & the concrete gutters weren't level because the back wheel ended up off the ground, while the two training wheels still had contact with the street. So, she ended up pedaling nowhere, with the back wheel just spinning in the air. It was kinda funny.
It's instantly spring around here. It was about 60 degrees today, and supposed to be 67 tomorrow. It's also supposed to rain for the next few days with a chance of snow showers on Saturday. What??? Did I just read that right? Grrr, Michigan weather is SO crazy. It won't stick, as the temp's supposed to be in the high 40's. Hopefully the rain will melt all the remaining snow on the ground. It's mostly just in humongous piles in parking lots and such. I think we can officially put away the "fluffy" coat and snow pants. Today was the first day in about 5-6 months where I haven't had to send Emma to school looking like the Michelin Man.
Sarah's glasses should be in by the end of this week, hopefully. I'm so tired of waiting for medical personnel to get on the ball. It seems to take forever to get things done. I think she's going to look so cute once we get them!! If I can keep them on her. I'm really hoping for a surge in gross motor skills once she starts wearing them. I think she really is just scared to move anywhere by any other way except rolling due to the fact that she can't see very well. She IS making progress in moving from a sitting position to a crawling position. She mostly ends up on her tummy, but she's trying really hard! We have her annual IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan) meeting on the 7th of April. Her PT told the coordinator that she thought Sarah might benefit from OT & the Infant Teacher. I'm glad they agree, because I thought she could have used those service 6 months ago, but I digress. At least we're starting down the road now. I'm going to push for PT, OT & the Infant Teacher at least once a week each, for 30 minutes. I also want to push for ST as well, but I doubt they'll approve that. I also need to find out if services are going to be halted during the summer, as all this goes through the school system. I really hope not. What's the point of doing all this work, only have it negated by 3 months of nothing? That's probably what most parents think about the summer break, lol.

Happy Easter!!!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. Ours was relaxing, to a point. We went to church, which we don't get to do very often, as our church is 65 miles away. But, we went. I was happy we did. It was nice. We met a lot of people, Emma had fun and we all got Krispy Kreme on the way. But, as with any drive into Lansing, we had to do something else to make the hour and 15 minute long drive just a little more worth it. So, we went to Applebee's for lunch. Sarah sat in a high chair and didn't want to eat her fruit puffs. She instead, wanted my pickle. I had 2 slices of pickle with my chicken fajita roll-up and she wanted them. She went after that thing. She was sucking all the juices out of it & trying to eat the middle flesh, all with this look on her face like, this tastes weird, but I like it! Like when Jeff eats a pickle and he does this all over body shiver. I guess pickles just have that affect on our family.
Emma got a bike from the Easter Bunny. Santa was going to get her one, but didn't feel it was fair to give a child a bike in the middle of winter in Michigan. She wouldn't have been able to ride it until, well, now. So, it was the Easter Bunny's dubious job to get one for her. He found one on sale, not bad. He had some help, as mommy & daddy put it together at midnight, while cursing the vague directions (why do they give me instructions for handle brakes, when there ARE NO handle brakes on this bike??). It's purple & pink, Emma's 2 favorite colors. Now all we need is a trailer for Sarah & I can go riding with her.
The day would have been that much better if we all still weren't sick. Not Jeff, though, that super-human immune system he has is still in full swing. Emma's still coughing & snotty, Sarah's just snotty, and me, well, I've been better. When I went to the doctor's last week, she said to come back in if things got worse. Mind you, I'm already on nasal spray & Rx decongestant. Yet, things have gotten worse. The entire left side of my face HURTS! I think my sinuses are backed up to my chin, if that's possible. And this morning, green snot. Yay!!! More infection. Things could be worse, though. I read this online journal at Babycenter.com, entitiled "Bringing up Ben & Birdy" about a Mass. women who has 2 kids, Ben, 5, and Birdy (Abigail), almost 2. Her kids tend to be sick...a lot. This last weeks entry talked about Birdy puking numerous times in the car, and then EVERYONE getting sick, as well. Her son Ben had a 10 day fever a few weeks ago. While I've dealt with the puking in the car (on a road trip with Emma in CA by myself, before Sarah), I don't think I could handle the kids being that sick, that often. Emma, of course, thinks she's fine, and it doesn't seem to bother her that she's constantly sniffing or that her cough sounds just it did a week ago. Grrr, I hate all this sickness.

Spring comes to the Midwest
Could it be? No snow in the forecast? Temp's in the high 40's & low 50's?! YAY! I think spring has finally decided to show up!!! The snow's melting, I hear birds (well maybe it's just seagulls), and I don't need to wear 5 layers of clothing! I think this has been the longest winter of my life. Even longer than last year, when I was pregnant.
This will definitely help all of our moods, which are pretty sour from being sickly. We're all still snotty & coughing, but at least it's not snowing! See, I'm trying to be optimistic.
Sarah's PT didn't show this morning. I had heard a rumor that it was Spring Break at the school where the EI team is, and that she wasn't supposed to come this week. But I think I distinctly remember her saying that she would. Oh well. I got up, and made Emma & I pancakes this morning, so it wasn't a total loss. Otherwise, I would have slept in as much as the kids would let me.
We're going out to lunch with Jeff & a few guys from work. Pizza Hut buffet. Yummy. Apparently the college kids know exactly where to go on each day of the week to get the most food for the littlest money. They have this town wired. Ah, to be in college.

Pass the tissue
We're all still sick here. I went to the doctor yesterday, and I have a viral infection. Yay. More drugs. Poor Sarah's face is chapped from all the wiping of snot, Emma's got a bad cough & mommy sounds like a frog has taken up residence in her larynx. Sarah had an ENT appointment this morning, and all's well. Her hearing tested fine, and her ear canals aren't so small that they can't see her ear drums, which is a good thing. He also said, as of right now, she doesn't have an ear infection. I'm hoping that stays true until her cold is gone. Emma stayed home from school again today. She went yesterday, but her cough got worse through the evening, and I just decided it wasn't worth it. I just hope she didn't spread her germs to the entire class.
We got Sarah's new car sat in today!!! I installed it, very easy, and she had her first trip. To Rite-Aid & Meijer, what fun! She seems to like it, as she fell asleep in it on the way home. I guess that means it's comfortable. It's going to be an adjustment to having to take her to & from the car now without the infant seat, but it should be fine. She likes sitting in grocery carts, so that's not a big deal.
After I start feeling better, I'm going to need to sterilize this whole house. Get out the rubbing alcohol. Spring better "spring" soon, otherwise, we're all going to end up with pneumonia. On a positive note, there's only 2 days of snow forecast for the next week and a half. Yay, maybe by May, all the snow will be gone! Grrr. I hate the midwest right now. I can't even remember what green grass looks like anymore. How sad is that. At least Emma is trying to be optimistic. She keeps saying that "spring is coming!" She's finally tired of winter, too. She says her coat is too "fluffy". We bought her an Easter dress today, complete with shoes & a cute little purse. It's sleeveless, so unless something drastic happens between now & Sunday, no one's going to see it under her "fluffy" coat. I think we're going to church on Sunday. With a quick stop at Krispy Kreme on the way (bribery for Jeff). I know my dad's family will probably be meeting at Marie Callendar's for brunch. And it'll probably be warm. (Insert image of me green with envy) Anyone for hunting Easter eggs in the snow?? If we leave them white, it'll add to the fun!!!

I think I see the light
Ok, yesterday was just about the worst day I've had in a long time. Everyone in this house is sick. Like I predicted, Jeff has it the least. He's got a slightly runny nose. Immune system, I curse you! Sarah, poor baby, has been snotty & miserable for 36 hours. She seems better this morning. She actually slept the whole night. She was asleep by 9pm and didn't wake until 6:45am. Well, actually, if she did wake up during the night, I wouldn't have noticed. I took some Nyquil last night before bed. I had a fever of 100 degrees and had barely slept the previous night. I was getting sleep, no matter what. Emma climbed into bed with us about midnight. She slept with us until Sarah got up, then she went out to watch TV.
I was supposed to go out to Morey Charter school today to check out their Kindergarden, but that's not going to happen. We're all staying home today. Well, not Jeff, he went to work. He was going to stay home, but I told him I felt a lot better. No more fever and the congestion's not as bad. Still feel crummy, though. So, no school for Emma. Thank goodness there's no gymnastics tonight.
Gotta go take care of my sicky kids.

Quarantine
I think we all need to be hosed down & sterilized. Someone brought a bug into this house & now we ALL have it. Emma's got a cough & a mild fever, Sarah & I have the runny nose and sore throat and I don't know what Jeff has, as he's still sleeping. Today's his day to sleep in, lucky bum. Sarah kept us both up last night, so I'm running on maybe 3-4 hours of solid sleep. She finally fell back asleep about an hour after I finally admitted defeat & rolled out of bed. Emma's lounging & coughing on the couch while watching "The Smurfs". I told Jeff last night that I was getting sick. Argh, I hate that I can feel it coming on, but there's nothing I can do about it. But I'm sure if Jeff has caught what we did, he'll be over it in about a day. That guy's got an immune system of steel. He once had an abcessed wisdom tooth which spread into strep throat and he was still joking (it WAS kinda funny that this happened on his birthday, while he was on leave from boot camp). I think it's this climate we live in. I don't think I've ever been as sick as I have been since we moved to Michigan. While I was pregnant with Sarah, I had 2-week colds 3 times, one of which turned into bronchitis. Nasty. Not to mention, here it is, 2 days before spring, and it's SNOWING AGAIN!!!!
Yesterday was the college's Easter Egg Scramble. it was pretty fun. They had different age groups go at different times, so it wasn't so hectic. Emma had a blast running around. She got a few eggs and pieces of candy. Sarah just loved being there. She watched Emma play with the kids. Afterwards, we went to Coldstone. What else would you do on a snowy mid-western afternoon? Speaking of which, we have discovered that Sarah LOVES ice cream. She will throw a baby fit if you take it away from her before she's finished. She could be screaming her head off, but if you put the spoon with some ice cream on it in front of her face, it's instant silence. It's too funny.

School Daze
Ok, I'm completely overhwhelmed with all the choices for K next year. We have 2 private religious (read: expensive) schools, the 4 public schools & 2 charter schools. I really wasn't thinking about the charter schools because I'd heard some pretty bad stuff about them. But, I've also read that each one is different and can be great or horrible. I've talked to a few moms (including Emma's preschool ) teacher, who speak very highly of one particular charter school. It's out of town, about a 10 minute drive, and it's technology-based. They utilize computers a lot, even in Kindergarden. I'm going to go view their class on Monday. They have the longest school day & the longest school year (about 10 days more than other schools). They also have one of the smallest class sizes. They have gym, art, music every week, with occasional foreign language (I think she said Spanish & Japanese). So, it'll be interesting.
Sarah had her first in-home PT session this morning. Although it was early (8:30), it was nice not to have to leave the house. And, since it's with a Pediatric PT, I know Sarah will be in good hands. Her other PT was very nice, but he acknowledged not working with little kids for about 18 years, so I didn't think she was getting the best out of it. He agreed and pushed to have the pedi PT fit Sarah into her schedule. She gave me some practial tips to help Sarah feel more comfortable in the crawling position and getting into & out of different positions. I'm sure once she gets her glasses, she'll feel more comfortable moving around, too.
Speaking of which, grrr. It's taking forever to get some frames in that will fit her little face. It's ridiculous. They fit her eyes just fine, but the temples (the part that goes behind her ears) are WAY too long. They can heat them up & bend them, but the ends will end up right by the front of her face. Not exactly comfortable.
On a good note, I bought Sarah's new car seat this morning. Babycenter is having a sale, and the Britax convertible car seat was $20 off, plus I got an additional 10% off. So, even with shipping (yikes), it was practically $20 cheaper than the original price. This is the mondo-expensive, but very highly regarded car seat. It better be good. All the other ones I looked at that were cheaper just didn't look cushy enough. Sarah's still so small, I want her to be comfortable in this thing. She's still going to be rear-facing, at least until she's a year, maybe longer, depending on how comfortable I am. Because she's still so small, I don't think she'd be safe forward facing just yet. When she gets closer to 20 lbs. maybe. That might take awhile, as she's barely 15 lbs. now. She's mon petite fille. Plus, she'll probably still fit in this for many years to come (Emma was in her convertible car seat for 2 1/2 years).
I can't believe Easter is so early this year. I remember last year, Easter was a week before I had Sarah. We'll probably have to hide eggs in the snow this year. CMU is having their annual easter egg hunt tomorrow. We're taking the girls. They have different hunts for different age groups. It should be fun. They don't have one for Sarah, but I know she'll probably just end up licking the eggs anyway.
The Mt. Pleasant Parks & Rec schedule is out. We're probably going to put Emma in Summer Soccer. The preschool has a summer session from the middle of May until the end of June, so that'll help occupy her until soccer starts. We might even do swim. I'm thinking about getting Sarah into it for at least a session. I know Emma needs to learn how to swim. She doesn't like big pools and we're going on a cruise sometime within the next 2 years, so she needs to get over her fear of "big water". They also have T-Ball, but it's around the same time as preschool, and I think that might be too much. Next year she'll be able to do the PEAK program.

Back to school
Emma started school again yesterday. After having 2 weeks off, she was glad to go back. Of course, we were late the first day back, as we had to drive to Bay City to get our car fixed. They had a recall on our Odyssey, something about a fuel pump connector. Anyways, it required I drive an hour to get it fixed. It (along with a standard oil change) was supposed to take an hour and half. Two and half hours later we left. I was racing back towards home, to try & get Emma to school as on time as possible. We were only 20 minutes late. She didn't even miss snack.
Emma also had gymnastics last night, which she was very excited about. She and her friend Morgan always have so much fun together there.
Jeff also started back to school yesterday, after his one week off for Spring Break. He's not as excited as Emma. But, at least this means the semester is half over.
We have "Kindergarten Night" tonight. I asked Sue (Morgan's mom) what this all entailed and she said basically, they tell you about registering and the dates for everything. She also said that they've decided to changed the school schedule for K next year. So, instead of going full days on Monday & Wednesday and only a half day on Friday, I think Emma will be going everyday, for at least a half day. I like that a whole lot better than the other schedule they had. That was ridiculous. Jeff, unfortunately can't go tonight. He has a business meeting with a company called APC. He has to go schmooze (or get schmoozed) at a business dinner at the Embers. Oh well, hopefully they'll send us home with lots of hand-outs. I think Sue also said something about testing. Yikes, I hate that word. I never liked the idea of someone, who doesn't know my child, using an arbitrary test to determine what her strengths and weaknesses are and therefore putting her in a little box with a label. But, I guess that's what the school system is known for and I better get used to it.
I'm feeling much better this week after my trip to the ER last week. It took me until about Friday to feel 100%. Whatever caused the gastritis was just too weird & flukey. But, I'm back to my old self again. I don't what caused it, so it's kinda hard to try & keep it from happening again.
Jeff & I are once again WAY too involved with an MMORPG (MAssively Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game). Instead of Final Fantasy XI, which we quit playing a few months back, now we're into World of Warcraft. I'm thinking I like this one better. I am, once again, a magic dealer and Jeff's the smash-em-up guy. He's a Paladin, so that means he can also heal, which is nice. The only thing that's different now is that we're playing together, at the same time. So, we go out on quests together & are staying the same level. It's nice because his character can hit harder than my character but I can deal more damage from far away. And if we get into trouble, he can heal my character. Jeff's job bought him a new laptop, so he's very excited about being able to play the game on that. So now you know what we do after the kids go to sleep...play games online, just like the other geeks.

Fun times at the ER
Jeff had to take me to the ER yesterday morning. I'd been having severe abdominal pain, plus vomiting and diarrhea since Monday night. After 3:30am, neither of us got any sleep. I was in too much pain and the kids kept waking up. I spent most of the time between 3:30 and 6:30 pacing, trying to get into a comfortable position, checking my symptoms on the internet (not a good thing to do when you're in pain and irrational) and running to the bathroom. Finally at 6:30am I told Jeff we needed to go to the hospital. We got there around 7am and didn't get into a room until around 8am. Jeff & the girls couldn't come back with me, so they had to wait in the waiting room. I tried to get comfortable on the tiny bed, but it really wasn't working. Of course, every 5 minutes, someone had to come in and ask me the same questions someone else had asked about 5 minutes before. I told them, whatever's wrong with me, just give me something for the pain. The vomiting and other stuff I can handle, but the pain is almost as bad as labor.
After about 2 hours, they came in and told me that I had gastritis or gastroenteritis (I think they're the same thing). They gave me an IV to give me some fluids and something for the nausea (I told them again, the nausea I can handle, but the pain I can't). They said it would help with the pain, too, but I don't think it did. So, after 4 1/2 hours, I was allowed to go home. Poor Jeff had to stay in the waiting room that whole time with 2 hungry kids. They gave me a Rx and we went home. I pretty much slept the rest of the day. I was exhausted and in pain. Jeff went to go get my Rx and only after I had taken it did I read that it's considered a barbituate and can go into breastmilk. I had told them a few times that I was still nursing, but do doctors ever listen?? So, I decided not to take it anymore. I found some Tylenol 3 from when I had Sarah that I'm taking now. It seems to be working. I'm still in pain, but not nearly as bad as it was. We all got a good night's sleep last night, which helped a lot. It also helped that Sarah slept from about 9pm to 7am. I wasn't allowed to eat any solids for the first 24 hours, and even now I'm supposed to be eating bland things, as to not upset my stomach. So, it's Carnation Instant Breakfast for me for awhile.
Time for me to go make the kiddos lunch!!

Ray of light
The sun came out today, which helped my mood a little. I'm still seriously upset over Ike's death. It hit a little too close to home. While Sarah doesn't have nearly the health problems that Ike did, he was only a little older than her. And this cold weather & all this snow isn't helping matters. I need warmth & sunlight on a regular basis. I've been trying to figure out a time when I could go on my "no hubby/no kids" weekend trip, but I'm having trouble. Jeff is going to be in school practially non-stop until August. Yay. By that time, I think Jeff will need a "no kids" weekend, as well.
Emma's getting a little stir crazy from not being in school. And we've got another whole week left. Hopefully the weather will cooperate & we'll be able to go somewhere this weekend or next week. I don't like driving in the snow. Makes me feel uncomfortable. It's ok once the snow has stopped, but driving in it while it's falling is just dangerous. Slippy & slidey and me in a big van that can't stop on a dime.
I think Sarah's getting her top two middle teeth. I think I see a little white under her pink gums. She already has the bottom two middle ones and the top ones on either side of the middle. It looks a little funny when you look at her mouth, but whatever.
Ok, Sarah needs to go down for a nap. See you later.

Sad day
An online friend of mine lost her little boy yesterday. He was 17 months old and had Down syndrome. It's very sad. He'd had a lot of health issues and was doing so well! I've been in shock all day. The outpouring of love for this little boy has been awesome. His mom has always been a pillar of strength, always encouraging others when they need it, and all the while being a wonderful and supportive mom to 3 kids. I can't imagine her pain right now. My heart is breaking for her. I couldn't even comprehend the thought of losing Emma or Sarah. It would thoroughly break me. Jeff thinks I'm paranoid by always checking on them while they're asleep, but you never know. This little boy was taking a nap and he somehow pulled out his trach and suffocated. It's just so sad. I'm going to go kiss my sleeping babies now.

More snow
I kid you not, it's been snowing (albeit lightly) non-stop for 36 hours. We got about 12 inches last weekend, and approx. 10-12 more inches since Sunday night. This is insane. Driving around last night, between gymnastics & picking Jeff up from work, was nerve-wracking. I was slipping & sliding all over the place & people take serious risks around here. College students (no offense to any who read this) can't drive worth anything. And since they make up 50% of the population of this town, that means there's a good chance that the person in the car next to, in front of, and behind you are ALL college students. Doesn't make me feel too safe. Oh, I'm sure, in normal conditions (i.e. NO SNOW) they would be great drivers. But, something about falling white stuff makes them completely incapable of making good decisions.
Ok, enough of my rant.
Don't get me wrong, when I don't have to go anywhere, the snow is beautiful. It's certainly better than looking at a yard full of dead, yellow grass and puddles everywhere. But trying to function while having to bundle up 2 kids in layers of clothing and schlep them to appointments/school/anywhere is not fun. I am SO craving spring. This is about the time of year when you forget what green grass looks like and how nice & warm the sun is supposed to be. That's when you know the novelty of winter has worn off. The same thing happens during the summer. You forget how cold & brutal the winter can be. But, at that point, you don't care.
I'm going to sign Emma up for some sort of sport during the spring & summer. I know she'll be bored to tears if we don't get her involved in something. I think they have T-Ball and swimming. That would be fun. She's doing gymnastics again and she's really enjoying it.
We went to Midland mall over the weekend to pick up a book from Barnes & Noble. While we were there, we decided to go to Payless Shoes to see if they had any that Jeff liked. Poor guy only has one pair that fit him right now. He's got wide feet. I thought, just for kicks, we'd see if there were ay that Emma might like. I remembered that I really didn't know what size her feet were. We measured and she's practically a size 12. A 12!!!! She was a 10 1/2 about 6 months ago. That made me feel terrible, because I realized that meant she had no shoes that were the correct size. This kid is growing like a weed. So we bought her one pair of sneakers. Hopefully those will last until the snow's gone, and then we'll buy her a few more. Snow boots and sneakers are all she really needs at this time of year. Thank goodness for hand-me-downs, otherwise this kid might not have any shoes! She grows out of them too quickly.
And Sarah, on the other hand, seems like she's never going to grow. A little boy, who has Ds, and was born on the same day as Sarah, albeit 9 weeks early, and was only 3 lbs. at birth is now bigger, in weight & length, than Sarah. You'd think I was starving her or something. She's such a tiny thing.
One good thing is I think she's finally learned how to put herself to sleep. I put her down for a nap yesterday & today and down to sleep for the night while she was awake. 2 out of the 3 times she went down without even a whimper. She talked to herself for a little while, but fell asleep pretty easily. And she slept from around 10pm last night to 7am this morning. Now, if only spring would hurry up and get here, life would be perfect.
